This section provides information on connecting media (packet) ports, HA ports, management ports, serial port and alarms ports.

Installing SFPs

Ribbon-provided SFP/SFP+ modules must be used to guarantee proper operation of the external ports. Failure to follow this recommendation may cause permanent damage to the system.

Management Ports

The following SFP transceivers are compatible with

The SFP+ transceivers must be installed in the following media ports and HA ports (if using HA) of each

  • Media ports: Media0_P, Media0_S, Media1_P and Media1_S
  • HA ports: HA0, HA1

The router connected to the Media ports MUST support 10 Gigabit speeds. Otherwise, the Media ports will not be able to communicate with the router.

Install SFP and SFP+ Transceivers

Follow these steps to install SFP/SFP+ during initial installation. To replace an SFP/SFP+, see the CRU document SBC 7000 SFP Modules.

  1. Attach an Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) wrist strap (provided in the

    kit) using the ESD grounding point on the rear panel of the chassis (see Connecting Electrostatic Discharge Wrist Strap). 
  2. Insert the Ribbon-approved SFP/SFP+ transceiver into the desired socket and ensure that the proper orientation when inserting, and that you will hear a click-in when the SFP is seated correctly.
  3. Connect/reconnect the fiber optic and/or CAT 5 cables, as appropriate.
  4. Verify LEDs above the part are flashing indicating link status and data activity.
  5. Verify port functionality using the CLI show status system commands once the SBC application software is installed and the system is up and running (for details, see show status system).
    1. Verify management and packet port functionality:

      > show status system ethernetPort 
    2. Verify HA port functionality:

      > show status system highAvailabilityPort 

If an unsupported SFP/SFP+ module is inserted, an error message similar to the following displays:

PNPS: Media1_P SFP/SFP+ detected not supported by Ribbon! Turning Media1_P off!
PNPS: Replace Media1_P SFP/SFP+ with an approved Ribbon part to ensure NEBS. Replace the SFP/SFP+ modules to resolve issue.

Connecting Serial Port

When connecting a serial cable to the rear serial port of the SBC server for communication with a host PC, refer to the figure below for the serial port location.

The SBC 7000 platform supports 1:1 active/standby nodes for high-availability by using dedicated HA links to interconnect the HA pair. The following table lists the network connectivity for the SBC 7000 platform.

management interface details:

  • The standby port uses a next-hop of address for the ARP probe. However, this feature comes from the

    platform next-hop configuration for the link detection group.
  • The management interface for signaling or media is limited to two packet or signaling ports. The SBC 7000 platform supports four media interfaces that is, 2+2 active/standby configuration to minimize the need for switchover due to network failure.
  • SBC 7000 platform uses a dedicated IP switch to provide connectivity between physical interfaces and internal components. The IP switch is capable of providing IP packet pre-processing in advance and offers significant flexibility in terms of policy, policing, and IP protocol support. The switch device also increases future flexibility of the platform by allowing software-based reconfiguration of many of the main data paths in the system.

Connecting Management Port

To establish the Management port connections, connect the CAT5e cable to the Mgmt 0 and Mgmt 1 ports. The CAT5e cable may be connected to a switch, router, LAN or WAN as per the customer requirements.

Connecting High Availability Ports

The physical connection between two

systems consists of a pair of single mode or multi-mode fiber directly connected between HA ports of each system.

The HA connections provides both box-Level and port-level redundancy system. The HA pair system consists of four management ports; two ports each per system. When a switchover occurs, the logical management address follows the currently active server. For the Media ports, the MAC and IP addresses float (are replicated from active to standby on failover).

A logical management address is the IP address associated with a Logical Management IP Interface previously created using EMA or CLI.

If using fiber SFPs for HA connections, both ends of an HA connection must use the same type. Connecting a single mode SFP to a multi-mode will not work.

Connecting Alarm Ports

The

ports, allow you to sense (Alarm In) and issue (Alarm Out) external signal. The Alarm Port utilizes a DB15 HD pin connector and supports 4 output alarms and 2 input alarms.

The current software release does not support the alarm port.

Alarm Out Ports

Each Alarm Out port is a dry relay contact. Each contact will withstand up to 60 volts DC maximum when open, and will carry up to 1 ampere DC maximum when closed.

Reset In Ports

Each Reset In port is an isolated, current-sourcing sensor which expects to see an external dry contact connection open and close.

No external voltage or current should be applied to the Reset In ports.

For proper operation, the total external load (wiring plus dry contacts) on a Reset In port must be less than 200 ohms. (Each Reset In port can source up to 20 milli-amperes DC of current maximum, and withstand a voltage drop of up to 7.5 volts DC maximum across an external load.)

The ESD Susceptibility symbol warns of the presence of Ribbon devices susceptible to electrostatic discharge. Do not handle equipment without wearing a properly grounded ESD wrist strap.
