Caution

Ribbon has designed special packing material to protect the platform during shipping. It is critical that the packing material be saved after unpacking the system. Shipping units without the original packing material may void the warranty. Replacement packing material can be purchased from Ribbon.

For more information about ESD requirements, see Electrostatic Discharge Requirements.

Hardware Components Included with the DSC 8000

The following major components of the DSC Platform are delivered separately:

  • One Cabinet with 19” racks for four shelves installed (required) and one Power Distribution Unit (PDU) installed (required) and one Alarm Panel installed (required)
  • One Control Shelf (required)

Unpacking the Cabinet

The instructions in this section provide you with the required steps to unpack the DSC Platform cabinet.

Note

An accessory box is included in the shipping create that includes a Welcome letter, licenses, cables, and so on.

The DSC Platform cabinet with a PDU and Alarm panel weigh approximately 183.70 Kg (405 pounds). Use proper lifting techniques when lifting the cabinet or moving the crate pieces; otherwise, you may be injured.

Start

  1. Check the shipping crate for damage.
  2. If the shipping crate or contents are damaged, notify the carrier and Ribbon for an insurance settlement. Retain the shipping crate and packaging material for inspection by the carrier. Obtain authorization from Customer Support (see Customer Support) before returning any product to Ribbon.
  3. Using a #2 Phillips head screwdriver, remove the wood screws from each corner of the crate.

  4. Remove the top lid from the crate.

  5. Remove each crate side panel by removing the screws, until all side panels are removed.

    Note

After removing the side panels, the DSC 8000 cabinet is oriented on its side.

  6. Lift the cabinet from the crate to a vertical position.

    Caution

Three (3) people are needed to safely lift the cabinet from the crate to a vertical position.

Removing a Shelf from the Shipping Carton

Each shelf weighs approximately 17.24 kg (38 pounds) with the power supplies, and about 35.38 Kg (78 pounds) with a full payload.

Warning

Two people are required to safely lift a DSC Platform shelf and three people are required to install this shelf. Use proper lifting techniques when moving the box containing the shelf. To prevent damage to the components, never use component handles or cables to lift or move the entire shelf.

Start

  1. Check the shipping carton for damage.
If the shipping carton or contents are damaged, notify the carrier and Ribbon for an insurance settlement. Retain the shipping carton and packaging material for inspection by the carrier. Obtain authorization from Customer Support (see Customer Support) before returning any product to Ribbon.
  2. Move the shelf as close to the place of installation as possible using one of the methods below:
    • Platform with rollers (dolly) that can support 73 kg (161 pounds)
    • Lift-assist machine that can support 73 kg (161 pounds)
  3. Remove the straps from the palette type packaging.
  4. Lift the cardboard box top off of the shelf.
The remaining carton should include the shelf with the two 483 mm (19 in.) rackmount flanges fastened, the system cards seated, console cables, power cables, packing slip, and a welcome letter that includes your license information.
  5. Remove the carton content and additional packaging, with the exception of the shelf and its protective plastic. The protective plastic on the shelf is antistatic, and typically is tinted pink to indicate this characteristic. Do not remove the protective plastic.
  6. With two people security holding the shelf at the bottom, transfer the shelf to the place of installation.
  7. Wearing an ESD grounding wrist strap that is connected to a suitable ESD ground, remove the protective plastic that contains the shelf.

    Note

The shelf is unprotected from ESD without the plastic.
