    Physical Layer

See Configure the T1 Physical Layer.

    Type

Specifies the type of framing mode (T1).

    Framing Mode

Defines the number of frames that are grouped for T1.

    • T1: All T1 Framed modes use a 193-bit frame supporting one framing bit and 24 8-bit channels. There are 8000 frames per second with 1544000 bits per second data rate.
      • ESF –  Extended Super Frame groups 24 193-bit frames together, making a 24-bit frame word. Six of the 24 bits are used for the framing pattern, and the other 18 bits are used for other services.
      • SF – Super Frame groups 12 193-bit frames together, making a12 bit frame word. All 12 bits for the framing word are used for the framing pattern.
    • E1: E1 supports three framing modes and an unframed mode. E1 Framed mode has a 2.048 Mbit channel divided into 32 basic channels. Channel 0 is always reserved for framing and cannot be used for media. Channel 16 is the signaling channel and is used for different purposes. E1 frames are 256 bits (32 x 8 bits). There are 8000 frames per second with 2048000 bits per second data rate.
      • Double Frame — Basic E1 mode. Two frames form a 16-bit framing word (2 8-bit samples of channel 0). PRI can be used, and channel 16 is typically used for the D-channel. No cyclic redundancy check (CRC) is performed in this mode.
      • Multi Frame CRC with NoCAS — Groups 16 256-bit frames together to create a 128-bit framing word. Some of the framing bits are used to add a CRC-4 error check. PRI can be used, and channel 16 is typically used for the D-channel.
      • Multi Frame CRC with CAS — Works exactly like Multi Frame CRC with NoCAS, but channel 16 is now used for the ABCD CAS signaling bits. PRI can be run using this mode, but it is not recommended. The D-channel cannot be located on channel 16, and channel 16 cannot be enabled for media. If PRI is used in this mode, a maximum of 29 B channels can be used (channel 0, channel 16, and the D-channel are unavailable for media). This framing mode still exists as it is a valid E1 framing mode, but CAS is no longer supported on E1.
      • Unframed — No framing support and can be used for data.

Note: E1 support is only available on EdgeMarc 4806v2, EdgeMarc 4808v2, EdgeMarc 4808DB, and EdgeMarc 6000 series devices.

    Line Encoding

Defines the bit encoding method used while transmitting data over the line. B8ZS (Bipolar 8-bit zero substitution) and AMI (Alternative Mark Inversion) are currently supported.

ClockDisplays and sets the timing source for the T1 interface.
External: (Default) Retrieves the time from the network.

    Internal: Generates time locally.

The T1 provider usually provides network timing. Incompatible timing modes can lead to frame slips and temporary loss of data.

    Note
: If PRI is used on one or more of the T1 lines, the clock setting selected in the PRI page is used for that particular T1 line, not the value indicated on the T1 configuration page. All T1 lines that are used for data will use the selection from the T1 Configuration page.
    LBO

Line build-out setting (LBO) for T1. Configures the power and attenuation characteristics of the transmit signal from EdgeMarcT1 interfaces.

Note: LBO is not available when E1 is selected.

DS1 level settings are used when connecting an EdgeMarcT1 to a smartjack or T1 provided by the telephone company. The DS1 power levels can be changed depending on the length of the T1 cable from the EdgeMarc to the first T1 repeater. Typical values are0db and -7.5db. 0db is used for the longest cable lengths, while 22.5db is used for the shortest distances.

DSX-1 level settings are used when connecting an EdgeMarcT1 to a private line or a co-resident PBX without a CSU/DSU. DSX-1 settings can be changed based on the distance between the EdgeMarcand the terminating device.

    Fractional Settings

These settings are visible if MLPPP is disabled. See  Configure the T1 Physical Layer. Fractional support is also disabled when Unframed E1 is configured.

    Enable Fractional Support
Enables fractional T1 links. DSO bandwidth configuration fields become active.
Fractional support is disabled when Multilink is enabled.
    Data DS0 Start
Specifies the starting Digital Signal 0 (DS0) number.

The EdgeMarc calculates the total number of contiguous DS0s necessary and configures the line accordingly.
    Bandwidth

Specifies the bandwidth for the fractional link as a multiple of 64kbps.

    Enable DS0 detection

Automatically configures fractional support based on the IDLE values of unused timeslots.

Auto DS0 IDLESets the Auto DS0 idle time.
    Link Layer

See Configure the T1 Link Layer.

ProtocolSelects T1 layer 2 protocols for the T1 interfaces.

    Note:
The protocol must match the protocol sent by the network provider.
    • If multilink is disabled: Supports HDLC, Cisco HDLC, PPP over HDLC, Frame Relay ANSI, and CCITT. Optionally, PPP over Frame Relay may be enabled when ANSI or CCITT is selected as the protocol. The default setting is HDLC.
    • If MLPPP is enabled: Supports HDLC, ANSI, and CCITT.
      • ANSI protocol is PPP over Frame Relay
      • CCITT protocol is PPP over Frame Relay.
      • PPP operates over the HDLC channels (default)
    • If MLFR is enabled: Supports Frame Relay ANSI and CCITT.
    Use PPPoFR

(Optional) Enables PPP over Frame Relay when the Frame Relay ANSI or Frame Relay CCITT protocol is selected.

    Port Configuration Settings

    Refer to Configure T1 Ports.

    Enable Multilink T1

Enables Multilink T1 for bundling one or more physical T1 lines together into a single virtual pipe.

Note: if Multilink T1 is enabled, at least one physical T1 line must also be enabled. All ports selected for data are used in the bundle.

MLPPP Options and PPP LCP Settings fields become active. Refer to Configure T1 Ports.

    Encapsulation

Selects either MLPPP or MLFR as the encapsulation method.

Note: This selection must be the same as the method used by the service provider.

    Allow PRI Network/User Configuration

Note: This option is only available when E1 is selected.

When this option is selected, the EdgeMarc can support both Network and User type interface types on ISDN/PRI at the same time. Each E1 has a selection on the ISDN configuration page to select the interface type (network or user) to emulate.

When this option is enabled, ISDN PRI Configuration is reduced to a single page. Refer to Configure ISDN PRI.

Note: Calls between two E1s are supported, but Route all SIP signaling through B2BUA must be enabled on the VoIP page.

    Name

Specifies the interface name to assign to a T1 port. Maximum length is 60 characters.

Note: This name is not used by the EdgeMarc but is used as a mapping aid for network operators.

DataSpecifies that the port is used for Data.
    Note:
Ports used for data can be used for MLPPP bundling.
PRISpecifies that the T1 port will be used for PRI.

A maximum of two ports can be used for PRI. If more than two ports are selected, the lowest-numbered licensed ports are used.

Use the highest-numbered licensed ports for PRI. T1 data uses the lowest-numbered ports, so even if you are not currently using T1 data, using higher-numbered ports for PRI will eliminate any port assignment overlap.

When T1 PRI settings in this section are complete, you can configure PRI settings. Refer to Configuring PRI.
    Unassign PRI

Clears the PRI checkbox if it was selected. The Data checkbox is re-enabled.

    MLPPP Options

Configures Multilink Point-to-Point (MLPPP) load balancing functionality over multiple WAN links. These fields become active when the Enable Multilink T1 checkbox is selected, and Encapsulation is set to MLPP. Refer to Configuring MLPP Settings.

    MLPPP fragmentation

Enables data packet fragments to be sent over multiple PPP links to the same IP address.

    MTU

Specifies the maximum transmission unit (MTU) size in bytes after which data transmission to an IP address is fragmented.

    Custom Endpoint Discriminator

Specifies the system transmitting the packet and advises the network access server (NAS) that the peer on this link could be the same as the peer on another existing link. Because every client has a unique endpoint discriminator, only multiple links from the same client are bundled into a single, unique multilink PPP connection.

    Maximum FlapCount-
    Flap Interval Limit(seconds)-

    PPP LCP Settings

When in MLPPP, PPPoFR, PPPoMFLR, or MLPoFR modes, the Link Control Protocol (LCP) timeout and retry values can be adjusted for the service provider. The default values that have been optimized for quicker MLPPP link recovery may not work for some service providers. In those instances, the recommended values for the timeout and retries are 30 and 3, respectively. In general, higher values may result in more consistent initial link negotiation at the expense of recovery time. If higher values are not required to establish a link, lower values are recommended for great link recovery in multilink connections.

    See Configure T1 Ports.
    LCP Retries

Specifies the timeout for setting up a connection using Link Control Protocol.

Note: The default values that have been optimized for quicker MLPPP link recovery may not work for some service providers. The recommended value for retries is 30. In general, lower values are recommended for greater link recovery in multilink connections.

    PPP Authentication Settings

Selects the authentication for Peer-to-Peer Protocol (PPP):

    • PAP+CHAP (Password Authentication Protocol and ChallengeHandshake Authentication Protocol)
    • CHAP
    • PAP
    • None
    Authenticate with only

Specifies that authentication will only occur using a password.

    Frame Relay Settings

These settings are visible if MLPPP is enabled and one of the PPPoFR protocol options is selected. See Configure T1 Ports.
    Frame Relay Mode

Specifies data communications equipment (DCE) or data terminal equipment (DTE) mode for frame relay.

Note: This option is available only for Frame Relay ANSI or CCITT. By default, this value is set to DTE. The DLCI value is supplied by the T1 service provider and is used to identify the connection in the link data stream.

    Frame Relay DLCI

Specifies the DLCI value, which is a channel number supplied by the T1 service provider to identify the connection in the link data stream.

Restriction: Values 0-15 and 1023 are reserved and cannot be used.

Note: When the selected protocol is Frame Relay ANSI or Frame Relay CITTT, a secondary DLCI may also be configured. The secondary DLCI is used for voice services, and the Primary DLCI is used for data services. This allows the service provider to provide appropriate treatment to voice and data.

PPPoFR User NameSpecifies the user name for authentication by the PPPoFR switch.
    PPPoFR Password

Specifies the password for authentication by the PPPoFR switch.

    Frame Relay Secondary Settings

These settings are visible if MLPPP is disabled and fractional support is enabled. See Configure T1 Ports.

    Enable Secondary DLCI

Specifies either DCE or DTE mode for frame relay.

    Secondary DLCI

Specifies the DLCI value (channel number), which is a channel number supplied by the T1 service provider to identify the connection in the link data stream.

Restriction: Values 0-15 and 1023 are reserved and cannot be used.

Note: When the selected protocol is Frame Relay ANSI or CITTT, a secondary DLCI may also be configured. The secondary DLCI is used for voice services, and the Primary DLCI is used for data services. This allows the service provider to provide appropriate treatment to voice and data.
