You can terminate an established Level 4 connection from the MTP3 by closing its IP connection. Terminating the connection removes all registered user parts and Application IDs currently registered on that connection. Closing the IP connections is useful in the rare situation when the IP connection is locked up.

Caution

Terminating a Level 4 connection can cause message loss and should be used with caution.

The SCCP and Signaling Gateway reconnect if the IP connection is closed at MTP3. The behavior of other applications to a closed connection is not covered in this document.

Terminating the interprocess communication (IPC) link between MTP3 and a Level 4 SS7 application clears the routing keys that are registered on that Level 4 connection. However, this action does not remove preconfigured routing key information from the system. For more information about routing keys, refer to the appropriate section in the SS7 Application Guide 2.

In stand-alone configurations, there is a single DRE with one Level 4 connection for the SCCP and Signaling Gateway being used. On distributed systems, there are two pairs of Level 4 connections. If you terminate a Level 4 connection, the other DRE handles the load until the terminated IPC is re-established. There is no noticeable loss of services. Other Level 4 connections are not affected by this action.
