Overview

The Level 4 Converter SS7 Variant Configuration object has two instances, one for each network, creating a conversion stream combination such as ITU to ANSI and ANSI to ITU. These combinations are the Level 4 Converter’s processing rules.

The following objects are used to configure Level 4 Converter traffic conversion:

The Load Default Rules action that appears on the Level 4 Converter SS7 Variant object load the conversion rules as these rules are defined in the code. You can only load the default values if you have no Route Mapping, Message Rule, or Parameter Rule objects defined. In other words, if the Route Mappings, Message Rules, and Parameter Rules counters are set to 0.

The Load Default Rules action only loads the conversion rules for the Signaling Indicator (SI) that the Level 4 Converter is licensed for. For example, if you are working in ISUP only, then these values do not load SCCP data.

The Clear Rules action is for Customer Support and is only used for maintenance and startup activities. This action resets the Level 4 Converter Message Rule and Parameter Rule definitions.

Supported Configurable NAs

The L4 Converter allows for Configurable NAs for each SS7 Variant between 1 to 99 provided that the given NA is configured at MTP3.

If you want to have two point code formats for two NAs translated through the Level 4 Converter, consider the following:

  • The traffic must be deactivated before configuring the Network Appearance (NA) attribute for the Level 4 Converter.

  • No route mappings should exist on either SS7 Variant on the Level 4 Converter before configuring the Network Appearance attribute.

  • The Network Appearance value selected for one SS7 Variant must not be in used by the other SS7 Variant at the Level 4 Converter.
Caution

Deactivating traffic or deleting route mappings should be performed with care on the Level 4 Converter. These actions can affect the service on a live system.

Note

The screen captures in this section are related to ANSI and ITU conversion.

Configuring a Level 4 Variant

The following demonstrate how to configure a Level 4 Converter SS7 Variant and Level 4 Converter SS7 Variant Features

To configure a Level 4 Converter SS7 Variant

  1. From the Main Menu, click Level 4 Converter.

  2. Click the required Level 4 Converter SS7 Variant.

  3. Configure the attributes as required.

  4. Click Continue.

To configure a Level 4 Converter SS7 Variant Features

  1. From the Main Menu, click the Level 4 Converter.

  2. Click the required Level 4 Converter SS7 Variant.

  3. Click Converter SS7 Variant Features.

  4. Configure the required attributes.

  5. Click Continue.

Creating and Configuring Route Mappings

The Route Mapping objects are used to map point codes between the two networks due to the possible point code incompatibility or conflict. Each Route Mapping also contains switch-specific conversion flags for certain variant combinations. You must add a new Route Mapping for each new switches accessing the Level 4 Converter.

To create a Route Mapping

  1. From the Main Menu, click the Level 4 Converter.

  2. Click the required Level 4 Converter SS7 Variant.

  3. Click Route Mappings.

  4. Click Create.

  5. Configure the required attributes.

  6. Click Create.

    Tip

To delete a Route Mapping, click the Delete button  in the same line that the Route Mapping you want to delete appears.

To configure a Route Mapping

  1. From the Main Menu, click the Level 4 Converter.

  2. Click the required Level 4 Converter SS7 Variant.

  3. Click Route Mappings.

  4. Click the required Route Mapping.

  5. Configure the required attributes.

  6. Click Continue.

    Tip

Although the Route Mapping Conversion Screen appears for the Route Mapping object, this screen is not required for conversion configuration (refer to Level 4 Converter Web UI for attribute description.

Creating and Configuring Message Rules

The Message Rule objects are used to define the processing of incoming MSU traffic based on the message identifier. A default list of rules is provided for each supported variant combinations. Dynamic changes to the rules are feasible with the exception of additional nonparameter message processing, which requires a code change.

The action attribute can be set to

  • DISCARD to discard the matching MSUs.

  • PASS THROUGH to forward the matching MSUs with no additional conversions beyond the routing label and no parameter rules are applied.

  • PROCESS to trigger pre-defined conversion and apply parameter rules to matching MSUs.
Note

By default, each message without a rule is passed-through.

The CPAM action is reserved for SS7-IP deployments to encapsulate the matching MSUs to the IP network.

To create a Message Rule

  1. From the Main Menu, click the Level 4 Converter.

  2. Click the required Level 4 Converter SS7 Variant.

  3. Click Message Rules.

  4. Click Create.

  5. Configure the required attributes.

  6. Click Create.

    Tip

To delete a Message Rule, click  the Delete button in the same line that the Message Rule you want to delete appears.

  2. Click the required Level 4 Converter SS7 Variant.

  3. Click Message Rules.

  4. Click the required Message Rule.

  5. Configure the required attributes.

  6. Click Continue.

Creating and Configuring Parameter Rules

The Parameter Rule objects are used to define the processing of incoming MSU traffic based on the parameter identifier. A default list of rules is provided for each supported variant combinations. Dynamic changes to the rules are feasible with the exception of additional parameter processing, which require code change. If a Parameter Rule is added, make sure that the necessary Message Rule(s) is (are) defined and set to allow the Level 4 Converter  to reach the parameter section.

Note

By default, each parameter of a message, which is processed without a rule, is passed-through.

The CPAM action is reserved for SS7-IP deployments to encapsulate the matching MSUs to the IP network.

To create a Parameter Rule

  1. From the Main Menu, click the Level 4 Converter.

  2. Click the required Level 4 Converter SS7 Variant.

  3. Click Parameter Rules.

  4. Click Create.
