Service on a properly configured DSC 8000 should not be impacted by the software upgrade process. During this process, the system cards are stopped, are upgraded to the new software, and are restarted in such an order that the traffic is not interrupted on the system.

Execute the software upgrade process in the same order that this process is presented in the following workflow.

Note

The DSC 8000 that is being upgraded is referred to as the standby system and the DSC 8000 that is managing the additional traffic is referred to as the active system.

All the examples in this document assume a Linux/Unix environment. Alternatively, utilities such as psftp.exe and putty.exe can be used in a Windows environment to SSH.

Prerequisites

  • Review the Software Upgrade Terminology - DSC 8000 section.
  • Complete the Plan the Maintenance Window for a DSC 8000 Software Upgrade about 2 weeks before your planned upgrade.
  • It is assumed that your network is configured with redundancy such as two DSC 8000 systems in a mated pair configuration to accommodate a switchover of traffic from one system to the other, while the software upgrade takes place.
  • It is recommended that you upgrade the software when the traffic levels are low to avoid the risk of triggering network congestion on the active system.
  • Customer Support provides emergency support to customers who have a support agreement. However, it is recommended that you notify this group about one week prior to planning a maintenance window for a software upgrade. For information, refer to Customer Support.
