Overview

ASM VM Notes - Before you Begin
  • A VM must be created on the ASM via Remote Desktop and Microsoft Hyper-V; the VM cannot be created through the WebUI. For details on creating a VM via Microsoft Hyper-V, review the Microsoft Hyper-V documentation.
  • For operating and VM and starting/stopping Hyper-V, see Operating ASM Virtual Machines.

  • The VM can also be configured through Hyper-V via  Remote Desktop. Any changes to the VM through Hyper-V are reflected in the ASM Virtual Machine table.

VMs created on the ASM are listed in the ASM Virtual Machine table; the VMs in this table can be viewed, accessed, and modified. The VM's state determines the configuration options available for editing:

Stopped

The following General Configuration fields are configurable (see ASM Virtual Machine - Field Definitions):

Network General Configuration is unavailable.

Stopping

The VM is stopping (resulting from a VM Shut Down). The following General Configuration fields are configurable (see ASM Virtual Machine - Field Definitions):

  • Name
  • Logical CPU
  • Assigned Memory
  • Network Adapter

Network General Configuration is unavailable.

SavedA copy of the VM image has been saved. General Configuration is viewable only. 
PausedThe VM is paused. General Configuration is viewable only. 

 

Accessing ASM Virtual Machines

When the VM is "Turned off", it is not available in the table. For operating ASM Virtual Machines, see Operating ASM Virtual Machines.

To access an ASM Virtual Machine:

  1. In the WebUI, click the Tasks tab.

  2. In the left navigation pane, under the Application Solution Module, click Virtual Machines.

OR

  1. In the WebUI, click the Settings tab.

  2. In the left navigation pane, select Application Solution Module > Virtual Machines.

The VMs created through Hyper-V and a Remote Desktop connection are listed and can be modified. ASM Virtual Machine - Field Definitions.

View/Modify an ASM Virtual Machine

The VM's state determines which configuration properties are available for editing/configuration. The states and available configuration properties are listed in the sections which follow.

In general, access a VM as follows:

  1. Access the ASM Virtual Machines table. See Access ASM Virtual Machines Table.

  2. Click the expand () Icon next to the entry you wish to modify.
    The configuration properties available depend on the VMs State. See below for each state. 

  3. Edit the properties available. For details, see ASM Virtual Machines - Field Definitions.

Modify a VM in Stopped State

If the VM is in the Stopped state, a message indicates that network configuration (IP address, DHCP, etc.) cannot be accessed.

  1. Edit the available fields. See ASM Virtual Machines - Field Definitions.

  2. Click Apply.

Modify a VM in Running State

The example below shows Network Adapter 1 attached to the VM. If the Network Adapter is configured for Adapter 1 and 2 (both Ethernet Adapters are available), Ethernet 1 Configuration and Ethernet 2 Configuration are displayed.

If the VM is in the Running state, a message indicates that network configuration cannot be accessed but general configuration can be modified. 

  1. From the DCHP Enabled drop down list, select whether DHCP is Enabled: Yes or No.

    If DHCP Enabled is Yes, other network configuration is unavailable. 

    If DHCP Enabled is No, network configuration fields for IP address configuration are available. See ASM Virtual Machines - Field Definitions.

  2. Click Apply.

View a VM in Paused/Saved State

The example VM below is shown in Paused state.

If the VM is in the Paused/Saved state, a message indicates that hardware cannot be modified. General configuration is displayed.

  1. View the configuration fields.

  2. Click Apply to confirm the fields.

To re-start the VM and return to Running state, click Virtual Machine Action > Start.

ASM Virtual Machines - Field Definitions

General Configuration Fields

Name

Description of the VM. This field is available for editing only when the VM is in Stopped state.

Logical CPU

Number of logical CPUs assigned to the VM. Valid entry: 1 - 8.

Hostname

The host name of the server in which the VM is installed.

State

Indicates the state of the VM. Executing operations on the VM through the WebUI alter the VM's state (operations via Hyper-V also change the state of the VM). See Operating ASM Virtual Machines.

Possible VM states include:

StateDefinition
StoppedIndicates the VM has been Shut Down or Turned-off.  General configuration is allowed; network configuration is unavailable.
StoppingThe VM is in the process of being stopped.
RunningIndicates the VM has been started. General configuration is unavailable.
SavedIndicates the VM's image has been saved.
PausedThe VM is paused (to re-start, select Start).

CPU Usage %

Indicates current usage of the CPU. Valid entry: 0 - 100.

Memory Demand

Amount of memory used for this VM in megabtyes.

Ensure the memory used for the VM does not exceed the memory required (4 gigabyte) for deploying the SBA. If the memory available does not meet the requirements for deploying the SBA, the SBA is deployed but an error message is displayed.

Assigned Memory

Amount of memory assigned for this VM in megabtyes.

Uptime

The uptime for the virtual machine. This field is displayed in hours and minutes (i.e., 21 hrs, 22 mins).

Network Adapter

Defines which network adapter is attached to this VM. Valid entry: None, Adapter 1, Adapter 2 or Adapter 1 and 2.  The Network Adapter attached to the VM is reflected in this screen. For example, if the Network Adapter is set to Adapter 1 and 2, both Ethernet Adapters are available.

Network General Configuration Fields

DHCP Enabled

Enables/disables DHCP on the Ethernet adapter in which the ASM interfaces. Valid entry: Yes (DHCP enabled) or No (DHCP disabled). If this field is set to No, the following fields are displayed: Default Gateway, IP Address, Subnet Mask, Preferred DNS, and Alternate DNS.

If both VM Network Adapters 1 and 2 are configured:

Configuring both VM adapters as DHCP clients can generate a conflict if they are not properly configured in the DHCP Server.

Default Gateway

Specifies the Default Gateway gateway assigned to the port through which the VM communicates. Field is displayed only when DHCP Enabled is set to No. This field supports IPv4 only.

IP Address

Specifies the IP Address assigned to the port through which the VM communicates. Field is displayed only when DHCP Enabled is set to No. This field supports IPv4 only.

Subnet Mask

Specifies the Subnet mask assigned to the port through which the VM communicates. Field is displayed only when DHCP Enabled is set to No.

Preferred DNS

DNS server used with the VM. Field is displayed only when DHCP Enabled is set to No. This field supports IPv4 only.

Alternate DNS

An alternate DNS server used with the VM. Field is displayed only when DHCP Enabled is set to No. This field supports IPv4 only.
