In this section:

FXS phone ports can be used to hook up a Group 3 fax equipment (G3FE) terminal for T.38 fax transmission over UDP to an IP network. If support for T.38 is disabled, G711uLaw is used for sending and receiving fax.

The following table describes specific EdgeMarc platform support.

FXS/Phone Port FAX Platform Support

PlatformSupport

EdgeMarc 250 Series

EdgeMarc 250 series hardware platforms support Fax detection and T.38 on all FXS/Phone ports.

EdgeMarc 4500 Series

EdgeMarc 4500 series H/W platforms support fax detection on all FXS/Phone ports, however T.38 fax is only supported on FXS/Phone ports 1 and 2. Ports other than 1 and 2 perform fax pass-through using G711ulaw.

4570,4571, 4572, 4574, 4575, and 4576

T.38 fax is supported on all FXS/Phone ports.

EdgeMarc 200 Series

EdgeMarc 200 series H/W platform, Fax detection is supported on all FXS/Phone ports, however T.38 fax is only supported on FXS/Phone port 1. Port 2 performs fax pass-through using G711ulaw.

Before you Begin

SIP UA must be enabled to configure FXS ports for fax services:

  1. Choose SIP UA from the Configuration Menu.
  2. Select the Enable SIPUA checkbox.
  3. Click Submit.

Refer to Configuring Basic SIP UA FXS Settings.

Configuring T.38 fax Settings

This section outlines how to configure the T.38 fax settings.

To Configure T.38 fax Settings

  1. Choose VoIP > SIP > SIP UA > Fax.

  2. Configure settings using the information in the following table as a guide.

    FXS/Phone Port FAX Settings

    ItemDescription

    Use T.38 for FAX

Select the Use T.38 for FAX checkbox to enable T.38 fax capability.

If this checkbox is not selected, G711ulaw is used to send and receives faxes.

    Fax Bit rate (bps)

Choose a rate from the Fax Bit rate (bps) drop-down list:

    2400

    4800

    7200

    9600

    14400

Specifies the data rate that the fax machine support. Maximum rate is 14400 bps.

    Fax TCF

Choose the data rate management method for the Training Check Function (TCF) signal.

Data rate management is carried out by the emitting gateway, which takes the T30 data and encodes it into T38 packets, port 1 or 2, based on training results from local and remote FAX terminals. This method is used for TCP connections and is optional for UDP.

Local—Requires that the TCF training signal is generated locally by the receiving gateway, which receives the T38 data and translates it into T30 data, port 1 or 2.

Transferred—Requires that the TCF signal is transferred from the emitting gateway to the receiving gateway. In this case, the speed selection is carried out by the G3FEs in the same way as a PSTN connection. This method is mandatory for UDP.

    Fax Options

Choose special settings for the fax machine:

    Default—No option is set.

BitRemoval—Fill bits can be inserted or removed in the Message Transmission Phase C, non-ECM data to reduce bandwidth in the packet network.

TransMMR—Conversion between Modified Modified READ (MMR) T.6 and the line format to increase data compression and reduce bandwidth in the packet network.

JBIGTranscoding—Joint Bi-level Image Experts Group (JBIG) T.30 provides the ability to convert to/from JBIG to reduce bandwidth.

    UDP Max buffer

Enter the maximum number of octets that can be stored on the remote device before an overflow condition occurs. Maximum value is 4096.

    UDP Max Datagram size

Enter the maximum size of a UDP Transport Layer (UDPTL) packet or the maximum size of the payload within an RTP packet that can be accepted by the remote side. Maximum is 512.

    Fax Error Correction

Choose the error correction method used by the fax machine:

    Transparent

    FEC—Forward error correction (FEC)

Ignore T38 Request in Initial Invite

(Optional) Select the checkbox to specify that an initial T38 request be ignored and to establish an audio call instead. On calls terminating onto a FXS port, in rare cases a T38 request can arrive in the initial INVITE message.

Unless this option is specifically needed, the box should be left un-checked.

  3. Click Submit to save all settings on the page.
