This page describes new supported features, and known limitations for the latest release of the Ribbon Session Border Controller Software Edition Lite (SBC SWe Lite).

The License Format Version 2 is obsolete as of the SBC SWe Lite Release 8.0.4 and later (refer to the License Types - Availability table). SBC SWe Lite instances with License Format Version 2 may experience service disruption after June 15, 2020. To prevent a service disruption, use the procedure outlined in the Upgrade Notes warning.

About the SBC SWe Lite Platform

The SBC SWe Lite is a virtualized, enterprise SBC designed for small- and mid-sized businesses. SWe Lite provides a virtual Customer Premise Equipment (vCPE) option for organizations looking to virtualize their interworking, security, and survivability for Unified Communications (UC). The SBC SWe Lite gives you the power to rapidly expand and activate features remotely using a simple license key, eliminating the need for on-site technicians or disruption to operations during peak business hours. With support for virtualization environments such as VMware ESXi, KVM, and Microsoft Azure, the SBC SWe Lite can be installed quickly and easily. 

Ribbon SBC SWe Lite Release 8.0.5 Build 237 is a new release for the SBC SWe Lite product line.

How to Verify Currently Installed Software Versions

After the software is downloaded and installed, use the WebUI to verify the currently installed software versions.

  1. Open the WebUI and the click the System tab.
  2. On the System page, click the Overview tab to view the the software version.

Installation Notes

SBC SWe Lite is not supported on the Hypervisor platform VMware ESXi 5.5 running on Dell PowerEdge 740 hardware.

For functional differences between the SBC SWe Lite and the SBC Edge 1000/2000, refer to Functional Differences Between SBC 1000/2000 and SBC SWe Lite.

Password Recovery for SBC SWe Lite

To recover a lost password:

  • First check with other members of your organization who have Administrator privileges and have them assist you.
  • If this is not possible, contact Ribbon.

Upgrade Notes

This section contain specific upgrade notes for customers planning to upgrade to SBC SWe Lite 8.0.5.

For SBC SWe Lite initially deployed via Azure Marketplace: The system is not automatically upgraded in the cloud; you must upgrade following the instructions below.

For SBC SWe Lite initially deployed via On Premises deployment (via Microsoft Hyper-V, KVM Hypervisor, or VMware ESXi):  Follow the instructions below for upgrading.

Warning: Before You Upgrade

Before you upgrade your SBC SWe Lite do the following:

  • Read these Upgrade Notes.
  • Make a backup of your current configuration.

Step 1: Backup Configuration - Mandatory

A configuration backup must be performed before proceeding with the upgrade. Refer to Backing Up Data.

Step 2: Upgrade the SBC SWe Lite System

Follow the general upgrade procedure outlined in the Upgrading SBC SWe Lite.

The License Format Version 2 is obsolete as of the SBC SWe Lite Release 8.0.4 and later (refer to the License Types - Availability table). SBC SWe Lite instances with License Format Version 2 may experience service disruption after June 15, 2020. To prevent a service disruption, use the following procedure to update the License Format Version 2 to License Format Version 3.

  1. Log into your SBC SWe Lite to locate and record the Software Version (refer to Viewing the Software Version and Hardware ID). Perform the rest of this procedure based on your Software Version:
    • If your Software Version is 8.0.3, locate and record the License Version. If your License Version is
      • Version 3, upgrade the SBC SWe Lite to Release 8.0.4 and skip the rest of this procedure; or
      • Version 2, proceed to the next step.
    • If your Software Version is 8.0.2 or earlier, your License Format Version is 2. Upgrade the SBC SWe Lite to Release 8.0.3 and then proceed to the next step.
  2. Contact Ribbon Support for a courtesy (free of charge) feature equivalent to the SBC SWe Lite License Format Version 3.
  3. Update the SBC SWe Lite with the newly received license file (formatted to Version 3), and confirm all features previously available prior to the license update are present.
  4. Upgrade the SBC SWe Lite to Release 8.0.4.

After June 15, 2020, the SBC SWe Lite License Format Version 2 will no longer be recognized by any Ribbon supported SBC SWe Lite image. For further license guidance, contact Ribbon Support.


SBC SWe Lite Upgrade Path

The following previously released version(s) of SBC SWe Lite can be upgraded to Release 8.0.5.

Downgrade Notes

Downgrade Release 8.0.5 or Later 8.0.x Releases to a Previous Release - Guidelines

For downgrading the SBC SWe Lite 8.0.5 or later 8.0.x releases to a previous release: A downgrade protection recovery partition has been included in Release 8.0.5 and later 8.0.x releases to simplify the booting process. As a result, you must downgrade 8.0.5 and later 8.0.x releases to a minimum downgrade release listed below:

New Features

The following features are included in Release 8.0.5

CHOR-5259 Allow Downgrade from 9.0 to 8.1.x and 8.0.x

A downgrade protection recovery partition has been included in Release 8.0.5 and later 8.0.x releases to simplify the booting process.

Resolved Issues

All resolved issues in SBC Edge 8.0.4 are included in SBC SWe Release 8.0.5. For the list of resolved issues, refer to SBC SWe Lite 8.0.4 Release Notes.
