The SBC 5400 hardware platform supports three interface modes for media ports. The 2 x 1 Gbps interface mode does not require a license and is enabled by default. The other modes require that an appropriate license is purchased from Ribbon and installed.

The following table lists the interface modes and their required licenses.

SBC-4X1GMP

2 x 1 Gbps or 4 x 1 Gbps to 2 x 10 Gbps Media Interface Upgrade Procedure

This section explains the procedure to upgrade the media interfaces on an SBC 5400 from either 2 x 1 Gbps or 4 x 1 Gbps interfaces to 2 x 10 Gbps media interfaces.

Warning

This is a service impacting procedure. The system must be drained of traffic before starting. Ribbon recommends that you contact Ribbon Professional Services for guidance before continuing.

It is important to save your existing configuration prior to executing this procedure because the existing configuration is erased during the procedure. Once the procedure is performed, you must rebuild the configurations from scratch (similar to configuring a new system).

Note that the existing configuration cannot be applied directly to other interface modes. For example, an existing configuration for a 2 x 1 Gbps or 4 x 1 Gbps interface mode system cannot be imported/applied once the interface mode changes to 2 x 10 Gbps mode.

Prerequisites

  1. Verify the SBC 5400 is running on a 05.01.00R000 or higher software version.
  2. Procure the required media interface licenses. Refer to SBC 5400 Media Ports and Operational Modes for details on media interface licenses.
  3. Have ready access to the original and all the subsequent licenses. Refer to the preceding table for the required licenses.
  4. Save your current configurations to use in the event you want to return to the 1 Gbps interface mode of operation (The 1 Gbps configuration cannot be applied/imported to 10 Gbps interface mode). Refer to Saving the SBC Configuration for details on saving your existing SBC configuration. 
  5. Have Ribbon-approved 10 Gb SFPs ready for each SBC 5400 system on which you are making this media interface change.

Procedure

The following procedure is applicable only when you upgrade from 2 x 1 Gbps or 4 x 1 Gbps to 2 x 10 Gbps interface mode.

Tip

Execute this procedure on both Active and Standby SBCs simultaneously.

 

  1. Log on to the SBC 5400 BMC GUI.

  2. Navigate to Remote Control > Server Power Control. The Power Control and Status window is displayed.

  3. Select Power Off Server - Orderly Shutdown (preferred) or Power Off Server - Immediate and click Perform Action.

    The server and the SBC application shut down.

  4. Navigate to Configuration > Platform Management Network. The Platform Management Network Settings screen is displayed.
  5. Check to enable the Enable 10G Media Speed check box. This changes the media interface speed from the current 2 x 1 Gbps or 4 x 1 Gbps to 2 x 10 Gbps.

    This is a service affecting action. The existing configuration will be erased from the SBC.

    A Confirmation window appears to warn that the existing configuration will be removed if you proceed.

  6. Click OK to proceed.
  7. Click Save. The new changes are saved. A message is displayed stating the configuration parameters have been set.

  8. Click OK to proceed.
  9. Remove and store each of the 1 Gb SFPs that are present in the 4 media port slots labeled as Media x where x=0, 1, 2 and 3. Place the Ribbon-approved 10 Gb SFPs in the Media 0 and Media 2 slots. Refer to Connecting SBC 5400 Ethernet and Data Cables for information on SFP selection, handling, and replacement instructions.
  10. Navigate to Remote Control > Server Power Control. The Power Control and Status window is displayed.
  11. Select Power On Server. The server and the SBC application start.

  12. Once the SBC comes up, log onto the application using the default credentials admin/admin. Change you password immediately to proceed further. Refer to EMA Mode - Login Window for information on application login credentials.
  13. Install the license key SBC-1X10GMP on both the Active and Standby SBCs.
  14. Log on to the SBC 5400 Application EMA.
  15. Navigate to Monitoring > Dashboard > System Status. The System Status window is displayed. Under the Server Status panel, the Pkt Port Speed column shows the speed of the media interface port.

Note

The Media port Pkt0 (Media 0) and Pkt1 (Media 2) now operate at 10 Gbps.

At this stage, the previous configuration is completely erased. Configure the application as per your needs. Refer to How to Set up a Basic Call Flow to start a fresh configuration.

2 x 1 Gbps to 4 x 1 Gbps Media Interface Upgrade Procedure

This section explains the procedures to upgrade the media interfaces in an SBC 5400 from 2 x 1 Gbps to 4 x 1 Gbps interface mode.

Note

The media interface upgrade from 2 X 1 Gbps to 4 X 1 Gbps operation mode is not service impacting. All four packet ports can be configured at any time. Adding the license key SBC-4X1GMP enables use of packet ports Pkt2 and Pkt3. 

Prerequisitesa 

  1. Verify the SBC 5400 is running on 05.01.00R000 or higher software version.
  2. Procure the required media interface licenses. Refer to SBC 5400 Media Ports and Operational Modes for information on media port speeds and required media interface licenses.
  3. For a 2 x 1 Gbps media interface, the media slots 0 and 1 are already occupied with 1 Gb SFPs. Navigate to Monitoring > Dashboard > Ports > Ethernet Ports > Packet Port Status. The Packet Port Status window is displayed. Observe that only Pkt0 and Pkt1 are in an Enabled state and the other two ports are in a Disabled state because they have no license.

  4. Place Ribbon-approved 1 Gb SFPs in media slots 2 and 3 on both the  Active and Standby SBC 5400s. Refer to Connecting SBC 5400 Ethernet and Data Cables for information on SFP selection, handling, and replacement instructions.

Procedure

The following procedure is applicable only when you upgrade from 2x1 Gbps to 4x1 Gbps interface mode.

Note

The existing configuration cannot be applied to other interface modes.

For example: An existing configuration supporting 2 x 1 Gbps interface mode cannot be imported/applied once the interface mode changes to 4x1 Gbps mode.

  1. Log onto the SBC 5400 Application EMA.
  2. Add the license key SBC-4X1GMP to the SBC 5400 licenses. Refer to Node-Locked Licensing for information on adding licenses.

    Add the Ribbon-approved 1 Gb SFPs and the license SBC-4X1GMP to both the Active and Standby SBC 5400s.

  3. Navigate to Monitoring > Dashboard > Ports > Ethernet Ports > Packet Port Status. The Packet Port Status window is displayed.
    The packet ports Pkt2 and Pkt3 are in the Enabled state after adding the Ribbon-approved 1 Gb SFPs to media slots 2 and 3 along with the required license SBC-4X1GMP. All four packet ports are enabled with 1 Gbps speed.

1 x 10 Gbps to 2 x 10 Gbps Media Interface Upgrade Procedure

This section explains the procedures to upgrade the media interfaces on an SBC 5400 from 1 x 10 Gbps to 2 x 10 Gbps.

Note

The media interface upgrade from 1 X 10 Gbps to 2 X 10 Gbps mode is not service impacting. Both packet ports can be configured at any time. The SBC-1X10GMP license key already in use for a 1 X 10 Gbps media interface also enables the second 10 Gbps media interface; no license change is necessary.

Prerequisites

  1. Verify the SBC 5400 is running on a 07.01.00R000 or higher software version.
  2. Have Ribbon-approved 10 Gb SFPs ready for the second 10 Gbps media interfaces on both the Active and Standby SBCs.

Procedure

The following procedure is applicable only when you upgrade from 1 x 10 Gbps to 2 x 10 Gbps interface mode:

  1. Place Ribbon-approved 10 Gb SFPs in the media 2 slots of both the Active and Standby SBCs. Connect the appropriate cables into the packet network. Refer to Connecting SBC 5400 Ethernet and Data Cables for information on SFP selection, handling, and replacement instructions.
  2. Configure the SBC application to use the second packet Ethernet interface as desired.
