The DSC 8000 is equipped with two required Routing CPUs (slots 3 and 12).

Caution

You must not remove both Management CPUs in slots 2 and 13 and Routing CPUs in slots 3 and 12 at the same time. Removing either Management CPU or Routing CPU in the aforementioned slots should be done during a maintenance window. Otherwise, the system may not perform as expected.

You can log onto either Management CPU card (slot 2 or slot 13) to configure the Ethernet interfaces that are unique to the Routing CPU cards.

To configure Routing IP Network

  1. From the Main Menu, click IP Networking.

  2. Click Network Interfaces.

  3. Click Routing IP Network.

  4. Use the Add New Routing Subnet drop-down list to select a required subnet.

  5. Click Add.

  6. Enter a valid IP4 or IPv6 address and Netmask.

  7. Click Save and Restart Networking.

    Caution

Restarting networking can cause a momentary interruption in transmitting traffic and some messages can be lost. It is recommended that this action is executed during a maintenance window.

Configuring the IP/SCTP Packet Size

This unlicensed feature supported on the DSC 8000 allows you to configure the IP/SCTP packet [also referred to as Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) size (in bytes)] for the DSC routing interfaces to best suit your unique networking environment.

Note

This feature is not supported for the Management and Application CPUs. The MTU for these interfaces is set by the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) to 1500 bytes by default that cannot be changed.

The DSC 8000 routing interfaces are p19p1 and p19p2. Configuring the MTU size for these routing interfaces can be done using the Web UI. This UI displays the ACTUAL and Configured MTU. If the MTU size has not been configured, the Configured MTU input box will be blank (Unset).

The Configured MTU size limit for the DSC 8000 is between 1,280 bytes up to 9,710 bytes. MTU sizes below 1,280 or above 65,535 bytes are not accepted by the Web UI. If the configured MTU size is above the limit supported by the OS, an error message is displayed informing you that the MTU size is not supported by the platform. This value may be below 65,535 depending on the system variant.

System performance can be impacted negatively and positively by changing the default MTU size. Configuring a low MTU size can impact performance negatively due to more packets being sent. Configuring a high(er) MTU size can impact performance positively but there can be packet loss if the external routers have problems with the bigger packets.

The Configured MTU size survives reboot, upgrade, and network restart. In case of a rollback, this value returns to the MTU size that was configured before the software upgrade.

Additional considerations for this feature are as follows:

  • Only a root user can reconfigure the MTU size.
  • Configured MTU size will be blank/unset for all interfaces when upgrading a DSC 8000 to 17.0.0.R00.
  • Changing the Configured MTU size takes effect immediately without a network restart.

To configure the IP/SCTP packet size

  1. From the Main Menu, click IP Networking.

  2. Using the Network Interfaces on drop-down menu, select the required Routing CPU.

  3. In the text box for the Configured: value, enter the required MTU size.

  4. Click Apply MTU.

    Note

To unset the MTU size, delete the numerical value in the Configured: text box and click Apply MTU.
