This section provides information on the Ribbon SBC 7000 hardware platform specifications.
SBC 7000 Hardware Platform
The SBC 7000 chassis consists of the mechanical enclosure, internal backplanes, fan modules and power supply modules that provide the infrastructure required to implement the SBC 7000 hardware platform. The 5U mechanical enclosure provides six rear facing slots used to install the platforms components.
The bottom two slots have dedicated functions: the System Controller Card (SCC7000) module and Core Server Card (CSC7000) module. The SCC slot (bottom slot) contains the SCC module used for chassis management and Processing (also known as BMC Baseboard Management Controller). The slot 0 (above SCC slot) contains the CSC module used for Control and Data plane processing. The top 4 slots (1-4) are used for optional specialized hardware modules, the first released module being the DSP-LC high capacity transcoding resource module. The CSC7000 and SCC7000 cards, monitor and control the chassis environment and operation.
Chassis
The Ribbon SBC 7000 is contained in the 5U rack-mounted chassis. It can be front or center mounted in a standard 2 or 4 post 19” or 23" wide rack.
The SBC 7000 chassis is made up of five major functional blocks:
- SBC 7000 5U Chassis
- CSC7000 Core Server Card
- SCC7000 System Control Card
- Fan Controller Modules
- Power Subsystem
The chassis must be installed in adherence with the environmental specifications and power source requirements listed in Post Installation Checklist.
Front Panel
The SBC 7000 front panel consists of following modules:
- A front Bezel on which the various ports and LEDs are located
- ESD Strap Connector
- Two Solid State Disk bays
- Fan Assembly
The figure below shows the front panel LEDs with and without Bezel mounted on the front panel of the SBC 7000.
The table below lists the SBC 7000 Front Chassis LEDs. Each LED is controlled by GPIOs on the SCC7000s AST2400 processor. The default state of all LEDs are during a reset.

Fan Control Module
The SBC 7000 chassis provides connections for 4 independent fan controller modules. Each consists of a pair of fans controlled by a Maxim MAX6616 dual fan controller and AT24C64 FRU EEPROM. In addition, the fans are powered directly by -48V using a -48V to +12V isolated DC to DC power converter. The MAX6616 and FRU EEPROM are controlled by the SCC7000 via a dedicated I2C bus and are powered by the chassis +3.3 volt standby supply.
Rear Panel
The SBC 7000 rear panel consists of following modules:
- Two Earth Ground Terminals
- ESD Strap Connector
- Dual Power Supplies - two options
- Dual 180-240 V AC
- Dual -48 V DC
- System Controller Card (SCC7000) or BMC
- Core Server Card (CSC7000)
- SBC 7000 DSP-LC (Large Capacity)
Power Sub-System Module
The main source of power for the SBC 7000 chassis originates from redundant AC or DC power feeds. In the AC case, the chassis will be powered by 2 independent external 220 VAC power sources via 2 Hi-Line compatible AC inlet filter/connectors. The SCC7000 will route each AC power feed to a dedicated power supply which will then generate -48 V DC. Each supply will be capable of powering the maximum chassis configuration. When two supplies are installed, their outputs will be wire-ORed, allowing them to load share.
BMC System Control Card (SCC7000)
The SCC7000 card provides both the Baseboard Management Control (BMC) functionality as well as the Lights Out Management (LOM) functionality for the SBC 7000 system.
The SCC7000 card is responsible for the low level hardware management of the SBC 7000 system. The functionality supported by the SCC7000 card are:
- System fan management and power
- BIOS/Firmware upgrades
- System power management
- Front Panel LED management
The SCC7000 can be accessed via a dedicated Ethernet interface and a dedicated RS-232 interface.
The following tables describe each component of the SCC7000 panel.
Port | Cable Requirement | Description |
---|---|---|
Alarm Port | Customer supplied cable | Alarm contact via a single shielded male DB15 HD connector. This software release does not support the Alarm Port. |
Serial Port | Male DB9 connector | An RS-232 port used by BMC and control plane. The serial port uses a DB9 connector accessible from the rear panel. |
BMC ENET Port (Field Service) | Copper CAT5e cable | A single 10/100MB BMC ENET port. |
SCC LEDs | Color | Description |
---|---|---|
Hot Swap/BMC Ejector Switch | Blue | Normally Off. Flash Blue when SCC ejector is pulled 1/4" to indicate hotswap request. Solid Blue when BMC is ready for removal (unmounted). Will be OFF when BMC is swapped. Partial backing out the BMC ejector switch 1/4" initiates a graceful shutdown of the CSC. |
Power | Green | Power Good Status.
|
Status | Amber/Green | Module Status.
|
BMC Reset button (recessed) | Resets the SCC card which in turn resets all the cards in the Chassis. | |
RJ45 Link | Green | Solid Green with port link |
RJ45 Activity | Green | Blink Green with port activity |
Hot swapping the SCC will shut down the chassis immediately.
CAT6 cabling may be required in environments where there is unusually high Electro-Magnetic Interference (EMI) from power lines, manufacturing equipment, or certain types of lighting.
Core Server Card (CSC7000)
The Core Server Card (CSC7000) provides the control and data plane processing resources required by the Ribbon Session Border Control application. The control plane processing functional block is responsible all activities related to session management. This includes calls/sessions setup/tear down, media interface management, encryption services, etc. The data plane functional block is responsible for providing data switching functionality for the traffic packets received and sent through the CSC7000 card.
The CSC7000 cards contains a total of 8 x Small Form Factor Interfaces (SFP/SFP+):
- 2 x Management Ports: Two GigE Ethernet ports (RJ-45, SFP-LC-MM, SFP-LC-SM)
- 4 x Media Ports: Four 10Gbps Ethernet fiber (SFP-LC-MM, SFP-LC-SM)
- 2 x High Availability Ports: Two 10Gbps Ethernet fiber (SFP-LC-MM, SFP-LC-SM)
The following two tables describe the CSC back panel components and LED descriptions of the SBC 7000.
Components | Cable Requirement | Description |
---|---|---|
High Availability Ports | SFP+ 10G fiber cable | Two fiber SFP+ 10G ports for redundancy synchronization traffic. The platform supports box level redundancy via communication paths provided by the external HA Ethernet ports. |
Management Ports | SFP 1G fiber or Copper CAT5e cable | This process Management traffic and perform protocol termination. |
Media Ports | SFP+ 10G fiber cable | Four fiber SFP+ 10G ports for media and signaling traffic. There are two primary and two secondary media ports. |
Ribbon-provided SFP/SFP+ modules must be used to guarantee proper operation of the external ports. Failure to follow this recommendation may cause permanent damage to the system.
