When troubleshooting audio and media issues, a packet capture is usually required. The SBC SWe Lite packet capture feature captures only SIP Signaling, not media. This section details how to configure ESXi for packet capture on another virtual machine.

Pre-Troubleshooting Notes

This section only covers how to use the VMware vSphere Client. This section does not cover how to install the guest OS on a VM for the packet capture.

This procedure only applies to the Standard Switch (vSwitch) and not the Distributed Switch (dvSwitch).

Prerequisites

The audio troubleshooting procedures require the following prerequisites:

  • VMware ESXi server/host
  • VMware vSphere Client or vSphere Web Client
  • Guest OS media for installing the VM for the packet capture

Installing a VM for Packet Capture

Use the following procedure to install a VM for packet capture.

  1. If required, build a new VM that performs the packet capture (for more information, refer to your VMware vSphere documentation center).

    Note

You must connect the new VM to the same vSwitches as the SBC SWe Lite instance.

  2. If the SBC SWe Lite has multiple media (pkt*) interfaces and the call uses more than one pkt interface, ensure the packet capture VM also connects to the same vSwitches as the SBC SWe Lite instance.

The following example displays the SBC SWe Lite with two pkt interfaces; the packet capture VM (shark) connects to the same vSwitches as the SBC SWe Lite instance.

Example: SWe Lite with Packet Interfaces

Configuring the vSwitches for Packet Capture

Use the following procedure to configure the vSwitches for packet capture.

  1. Access the vSphere Client.
  2. Select the host in the Inventory View.
  3. Click Configuration.
  4. In the Hardware panel, click Networking.
  5. For the vSwitch you want to modify, click Properties.

    Note

You must modify each vSwitch that the traffic flows through.

    Example: vSwitch1 and vSwitch2

  6. Select the vSwitch you want to edit.
  7. Click Edit.

    Example: Edit vSwitch

  8. Click Security.
  9. Select Accept from the Promiscuous Mode drop-down menu.

    Example: Configure Promiscuous Mode

  10. Click OK.
  11. Click Close.
  12. Repeat the Properties modification steps on the other vSwitches that the traffic flows through.

After you complete this procedure, you can capture packets on the packet capture VM.
