In this section:
BFD (Bidirectional Forwarding Detection) provides a fast link failure detection mechanism for upper-layer applications. The BFD feature detects failures on any bidirectional forwarding path, such as direct physical link, and between network devices. The BFD feature is used by remote end points or routers to continuously monitor availability of the SBC interfaces. BFD functionality is defined in RFCs 5880, 5881.
View BFD Profiles
To view BFD profiles, on the SBC main screen, go to All > Profiles > Bfd profile. The BFD profile window is displayed.

Create a BFD Profile
To create a new BFD Profile, click New Bfd Profile. The create new BFD profile window is displayed.
Figure 2: Create New BFD Profile
Use the following table to configure the new BFD profile parameters. Click Save to save the profile.
Table 1: BFD Profile Parameters
Parameter | Length/Range | Default | Description | M/O |
---|---|---|---|---|
Name | 1-23 characters | N/A | <BFD Profile name> – Enter the name of this BFD profile. | M |
Default Detection Timeout | 5-60 | 20 | Specify the default Detection timeout, in seconds, for establishing a BFD session. | O |
Detection Multiplier | 3-50 | 3 | Specify the detection multiplier used to negotiate with the peer. It indicates to the peer the number of packets that are consecutively lost to determine a link is down. | O |
DSCP Value | 0-63 | 0 | Specify the optional DSCP value to point to a DSCP Profile. The value is used for the BFD packets transmitted. Note
In order for the BFD profile to work as as a link monitoring protocol, Ribbon recommends to use a DSCP value of 48. | O |
Is Multi Hop | N/A | False | Use this flag to indicate whether the remote peer is a neighbor, or instead is multiple hops away.
| O |
Min Rx Interval | 100-50000 | 1000 | Specify the minimum receive interval for the BFD, in milliseconds. | O |
Min Tx Interval | 100-50000 | 1000 | Specify the minimum transmit interval for the BFD, in milliseconds. | O |
Remote IP | IPv4 or IPv4 address | N/A | Enter the remote IP address (IPv4 or IPv6) for this BFD session. | O |
State | N/A | Disabled | The administrative state of this profile.
Note
LinkMonitors using a BFD Profile are activated/enabled only when the BFD Profile state is enabled. | O |
Edit a BDF Profile
To edit a BFD profile, click the radio button next to the BFD Profile name. The Edit Selected BFD Profile window is displayed.
Make any required changes and click Save.
To Delete a BFD Profile
- Click the radio button next to the BFD Profile you want to delete.
- Click the delete icon (X) at the end of the row.
- Confirm the deletion when prompted.
