Use the following workflow to activate High Availability on a pair of newly installed Edge 8000 devices. The workflow includes setting each device's local and remote HA interface addresses and installing the single HA license that applies to both devices.

Refer to High Availability for an overview of the High Availability architecture and a summary of the corresponding user interface changes. Refer to Workflow for Initial Setup - High Availability for the complete installation and configuration instructions.

Prerequisites

  • Login access at each device to the SBC SWe Edge webUI as user administrator (admin).
  • Completion of the Workflow for Initial Setup - High Availability up to this point in the workflow.
  • A Node-Locked License (NLL) for Edge 8000 HA deployment uploaded to the Active device. Note that generating the license file in Salesforce requires the SBC SWe Edge IDs of both HA devices. Refer to Obtaining and Installing an SBC SWe Edge Production Node-Locked License.
  • Ethernet interfaces defined or reserved for the SBC SWe Edge function:
    Ethernet Interface TypeCharacteristics
    High Availability

Each device has a dedicated SBC SWe Edge HA interface, High Availability.

When you enable the HA feature in the Enable High Availability step of this workflow, you assign each device an HA interface IP address. The HA interfaces must have static IPv4 addresses on the same subnet and at least three addresses apart. Example: 10.10.10.41 and 10.10.10.44.

Note that the SWe Edge HA interface automatically associates with Bridge 5 of the Edge 8000 device by virtue of Bridge 5 being assigned to Extra Interface 2 in the SWe Edge Settings of Running Setup Wizard - High Availability. The following diagram, HA Architecture Deployment Example, illustrates the interface assignments in a typical HA deployment.

    Media (packet)

Each device has SWe Edge media (packet) interfaces, Ethernet 1 and Ethernet 3

You will assign unique, static IP addresses to the media interfaces when you configure the SWe Edge logical networking interfaces, later when you return to Workflow for Initial Setup - High Availability and you configure the SWe Edge application on the Active device. (The SWe Edge settings replicate automatically to the Standby device in real-time when you configure the Active device.)

    Management

Each device has a SWe Edge management interface, Admin

You already assigned a unique, static IP address for each device's SWe Edge management interface when you set the Mgmt Host IP in the SWe Edge Settings of Running Setup Wizard - High Availability.

Job Aid: HA Architecture Deployment Example

Workflow

Enable High Availability on Active and Standby Devices

Enter the local and remote HA interface IP addresses of the first High Availability device (referred to as an SBC SWe Edge instance in the procedure), then reboot the device. Repeat the steps for the other device.

Attention

When assigning local and remote IP addresses, they must be static IPv4 addresses on the same subnet and at least three addresses apart. Example: 10.10.10.41 and 10.10.10.44.

Start

  1. Log in to your SBC SWe Edge instance.
  2. Click the Settings tab at the top of the WebUI.
  3. In the left navigation pane, go to System > Node-level Settings.
  4. Click Enable HA.

Enable HA on SBC SWe Edge Instance

  5. Enter the Local IP AddressLocal IP Netmask, and Remote IP Address in the Create HA Interface pop-up window.

    Note

The Local IP is the HA IP address of the instance you are currently in. The Remote IP is the other HA IP address of the other instance, as mentioned in the the Prerequisites section.

Create an HA Interface on the Instance

  6. Click OK. The following message opens.

  7. Click OK. The following message opens.

    Note

It takes about 2 minutes for the instance to reboot. The system takes you back to the log in page once the reboot is complete.

  8. Log in to your SBC SWe Edge instance.
  9. Click the Settings tab at the top of the WebUI.
  10. In the left navigation pane, go to Networking Interfaces > Logical Interfaces.

HA Interface on the Active Instance
  11. Confirm that HA is enabled on this instance. The HA role of the instance is seen at the right hand corner of the WebUI.

The HA Role is Shown at the Right-hand Corner of the Instance WebUI

  12. Repeat steps 1 to 11 in the second instance, which will become the Standby.

Verify High Availability Status

Verify the HA pair status to ensure that both the Active and Standby devices (referred to as instances in the procedure) are properly enabled.

Note

Sync Complete and Sync in Progress states indicate the system is healthy.

Start

  1. Log in to the Active instance.
  2. Click the Diagnostics tab at the top of the WebUI.
  3. In the left navigation pane, go to High Availability > HA Status Details to view the HA status.

  4. Repeat steps 1 to 3 on the Standby instance.

Install an HA License

Install the HA License on the Active Edge 8000 device. Once the Active SWe Edge instance accepts the licensing data, the HA feature automatically replicates the licensing information to the Standby.

Start

  1. Log in to the Active instance.
  2. Click the Settings tab at the top of the WebUI.
  3. In the left navigation window, go to System > Licensing > Install New License.
  4. Click Choose File and upload your license key.
  5. Click Decode to see the details of the license.
  6. Click Apply
  7. In the left navigation pane, select System Licensing > Current Licenses. The Current Licenses pane opens on the right.
  8. In the Feature Licenses section, verify the license count that is currently available on the system is as required.
