Set up the platform of an Edge 8000 Series device using Edge 8000 Setup Wizard.

Note

This procedure generally applies to both the Edge 8100 device as well as the Edge 8300. Some steps in the procedure apply only to the 8300 device. Skip those steps if your device is an 8100.


Prerequisites

  1. Login access to command line interface (CLI), from a serial console connection or a secure shell (ssh) client, as user insight and as the user system administrator (sysadm).
  2. Information required: IP address and FQDN for the RAMP server.
  3. Procedure or procedures that must be completed first:

Job Aid: Navigating Within the Setup Wizard

The Setup Wizard is a text user interface (TUI). To move between elements, and to activate selections, use the following keys from your keyboard.

Log in and Start the Setup Wizard

  1. From a serial console connection or an ssh client, log in to the CLI as the system administrator (sysadm) user.

  2. Change to root user.

    # sudo -i

  3. Start the Setup Wizard.

    # setupwizard

Complete the System Menu

  1. From the System Startup Configuration window, select System and press Enter.
  2. The System Configuration window appears, showing available elements to configure: 
    Hostname, Time Zone, Time Server, RAMP Server, PRI type, and 6WIND fast path cores.
  3. Select the down-arrow key to select an element in the System Configuration window.
    For example, 
    1. Select Hostname and press Enter.
      The Host Configuration window appears.
    2. Configure the Hostname settings.
    3. Enter OK to save the settings.
      The System Configuration window appears again, enabling you to select another element for configuration.
  4. Configure the settings per the following field definitions.
  5. Enter OK to save the settings.

System Configuration - Field Definitions

Field Descriptions
Hostname

Enter the hostname for your system, for example, e8000

Time Zone

Select the time zone for your system.

Examples:

For the Central time zone, select America/Chicago.

For the Eastern time zone, select America/New York.

For the Pacific time zone, select America/Los Angeles.

Time Server

Enter the Time-Server FQDN value, for example, an FQDN value from pool.ntp.org.

You can use your internal time server if you do not wish to use the public time server.

RAMP Server

Add the IP address or the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) for the RAMP Server. 

PRI type

Select the PRI interface from one of the following options:

  • T1Net
  • T1User
  • E1Net
  • E1User
6WIND fast path cores

Enter the number of core CPUs to use for the fastpath. The available values are 2, 4, and 6.

This field enables the router to access more core CPUs in the host operating system, which enables higher throughput and enhanced router performance.

Note

The total number of core CPUs is 8, shared between the SBC SWe Edge and 6WIND.

Refer to Complete the SWe-Edge Settings Menu to set the number of core CPUs used by SBC SWe Edge.

As an example, to select 6 as the number of 6WIND core CPUs, you must set the number of SBC SWe Edge CPUs to 2 or 1.

Note

Consult Ribbon Technical Support before modifying this setting, as Ribbon has optimized the default setting for overall Edge 8000 performance.


Complete the BR1-4 Menus

  1. From the System Startup Configuration window, select a bridge and press Enter. 
    The Bridge Configuration window appears, for example, BR1 Configuration window.

  2. Configure the BR settings per the following field definitions.

  3. Enter OK to save the settings.

Note

For BR3, there is no DHCP setting.

The DHCP Client requires a manual configuration of the gateway and DNS.

Complete the GE1-8 Menus

  1. From the System Startup Configuration window, select a Gigabit Ethernet (GE) port and press Enter. 
    The GE Configuration window appears, for example, GE1 Configuration window.
  2. Configure the GE settings per the following field definitions.
  3. Enter OK to save the settings.

  1. From the System Startup Configuration window, select an SFP port and press Enter. 
    The SFP window appears, for example, SFP9 Configuration window.
  2. Configure the SFP settings per the following field definitions.
  3. Enter OK to save the settings.

Complete the Default Gateway Menu

  1. From the System Startup Configuration window, select Default Gateway and press Enter. 
    The Default Gateway window appears.

  3. Enter OK to save the settings.

Exit the Setup Wizard

Exiting the Setup Wizard saves the configuration settings and applies the changes. This will cause a service interruption for approximately 3 minutes. The system will be unreachable during this time.

Caution

This operation causes a service disruption. Perform this procedure only during a maintenance window.
