IMPORTANT

The SBC 5100, SBC 5110, SBC 5200, and SBC 5210 platforms are no longer supported beginning with the SBC Core 10.0.0R0 release. This release supports SBC 5400/7000/SWe platforms. Contact Ribbon Sales for upgrade information.

SBC 5000 Series Hardware Platforms

Ribbon SBC 5000 series is available in four different platforms. The SBC 5000 series platforms are similar as they use the same types of components, but different models provide different hardware and capacity capabilities. All SBC 5000 hardware platforms support the Ribbon SBC application software.

  • SBC 5100 Platform—Small to medium session count deployments. The capacities make this product particularly well suited for medium enterprises and small to medium service providers.
  • SBC 5110 Platform—This is a modular form SBC that targets small and medium count deployments. This SBC model allows you to field install digital signal processor (DSP) cards as their network expands.
  • SBC 5200 Platform—Medium to large session count deployments. The capacities make this product particularly well suited for large enterprises and medium to large service providers.
  • SBC 5210 Platform—This is a modular form SBC that targets medium to large session count deployments. This SBC model allows you to field install digital signal processor (DSP) cards as their network expands.
  • SBC 5400 Platform—The SBC 5400 hardware platform comes equipped with four media ports and is available in three models based on the media port configuration. You must purchase the appropriate model based on their interface and capacity requirements. The media ports are enabled on the chassis depending upon the network interface license installed. For SBC 5400 Hardware information, refer to Installing SBC 5000 Series Hardware.

Chassis

The Ribbon SBC 5000 series 2U rack-mounted chassis can be front or center mounted in standard 19” or 23" wide racks.

The SBC 5100/5200 chassis accommodates following modules:

  • Motherboard
  • Optional DSP base card
  • Up to two optional DSP expansion cards (SPS100 / SPS100DB)

The SBC 5110/5210 chassis accommodates following modules:

  • Motherboard
  • Up to four DSP 25 modules or one DSP 20 modules

The chassis must be installed in adherence with the environmental specifications and power source requirements listed in Post Installation Checklist.

Front Panel

The SBC 5000 series chassis includes a front panel on which the various input/output ports and LEDs are located.

The Front Bezel and LEDs of SBC 5100/5110 Series figure shows the front panel LEDs with and without Bezel mounted on the front panel of SBC 5100/5110.

Network Ports and Connection

The SBC 5000 series chassis comprises the following external input and output ports:

  • Alarm contacts are provided on the outside of the chassis via a single shielded male DB15 connector.
  • A standard USB connector on the front of the chassis.
  • Front and rear jacks for standard ESD straps.
  • Cable management.

The SBC 5000 system supports USB 2.0.

Rear Panel

The following figures list the rear panel LEDs on the SBC 5000 series. The default state of all LEDs is during a reset. The rear panel layout and LEDs are as depicted in the Rear Panel LEDs for SBC 5200 Series figure:

Description

Alarm Port

Customer supplied cable

Alarm contact via a single shielded male DB15 connector. A single alarm port is present in SBC 5100 platform.
This software release does not support the Alarm Port.

Management Ports

CAT5e cable

Two 10/100 Copper Ethernet Ports which process Management traffic and perform protocol termination.

Media Ports

Single mode or Multi mode fiber Copper CAT5e cable

Two copper SFP or fiber SFP ports for media and signaling traffic.

High Availability Ports

Single mode or Multi mode fiberCopper CAT5e cable (NON-CROSSOVER TYPE ONLY)

Two copper SFP or fiber SFP ports for redundancy synchronization traffic. The platform supports box level redundancy via communication paths provided by the external HA Ethernet ports.

Serial Port

Male DB9 connector

An RS-232 port used by BMC and control plane. The serial port uses a DB9 connector accessible from the rear panel.

Field Service Port

Copper CAT5e cable

A single Field Service Port.

Power Input

Power Supply. The following are the descriptions of the power supply LED functions:

  • Off: No power input to the supply.
  • Amber: Power supply fault.
  • Blinking Amber: Main system power output fault.
  • Blinking Green: Standby power to BMC is ON but main system power is not enabled.
  • Solid Green: Both standby power to BMC and main system power are ON and OK.

Ribbon-provided SFP modules must be used to guarantee proper operation of the external ports. Failure to follow this recommendation may cause permanent damage to the system.

CAT6 cabling may be required in environments where there is unusually high Electro-Magnetic interference (EMI) from power lines, manufacturing equipment, or certain types of lighting.
