MTBF (Mean Time Before Failure) Data

Reliability data for the Sonus SBC 1000 and SBC 2000 is provided below. Reliability data such as MTBF are non-binding estimates of product performance and is based on use of the products in compliance with related product data sheets, including, without limitation, within the specified electrical, thermal and mechanical parameters. An MTBF measurement is based on a statistical sample and is not intended to predict any one specific unit’s reliability; thus MTBF is not, and should not be construed as, a warranty measurement. Please consult your Sonus sales contact should you have any questions or would like additional information.

Predicted MTBF values were calculated according to Telcordia Technologies Special Report SR-332, Issue 1, May 2001 using Method II, (Black Box stress method integrated with laboratory data) including noted items below.

  • Integrated circuits and ferrite inductors use vendor provided laboratory data.
  • Purchased assemblies use reliability data provided by the OEM.
  • Environmental factor = Ground Benign
  • Quality Level 2 used for all components
  • Maximum operating temperature = 40°C
  • MTBF value for chassis fans relate to the failure rate of the fans during their useful life, which is 70,000 hours per fan

  • .

Observed MTBF values are derived from actual field reliability measurements of SBC 1000 chassis, cards and other sub-assemblies as of November 2016. These values are subject to change as Sonus updates actual field reliability measurements on a periodic basis.

Base Predicted and Observed MTBF Values for Constituent SBC Edge Products

The tables below show list the MTBF for each of the items values for constituent (i.e. minimally configured base systems and optional daughter cards) used in the SBC 1000 and SBC 2000, as well as system MTBFs for several example configurations.

Predicted and Observed MTBF Values for Customer-Orderable, System-Level SBC Edge Product

Method to Calculate Predicted and Observed MTBF Values

The following equation can be used to calculate the predicted and likely observed MTBF for different combinations of models and accessories:values for a given SBC 1000 or SBC 2000 complete, fully assembled system. A complete list of such systems is available behind the Sonus Partner Portal.

Code Block
Predicted or Observed MTBF of complete SBC Edge System
Code Block
Total MTBF = 1/ ((1/MTBF of Base System) + (1/MTBF of first desired constituent accessory) + (1/MTBF of second desired constituent accessory) ...)

Values on this page apply to pre-6.1 hardware. Sonus will post 6.1 values in the near future, please contact your Sonus representative if you have any questions.

When using the equation, Sonus customers must use only observed or predicted constituent values from tables 1 or 2 to determine the system-level SBC Edge product. By way of example:

  • When seeking the predicted MTBF of an SBC 1000 complete, fully assembled system, only use the appropriate values from the Predicted MTBF in Years column of Table 1
  • When seeking the observed MTBF of an SBC 2000 complete, fully assembled system, only use the appropriate values from the Observed MTBF in Years column of Table 2

Examples of Calculated, Predicted, and Observed MTBF Values

The tables below shows examples of a Sonus customer using the aforementioned equation to calculate the predicted and observed MTBF for example fully assembled, system-level SBC Edge products.
